The Chiweenie

Understanding the Risks of the Chihuahua/Dachshund Cross

The Chiweenie is not a breed, but a cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. Do potential adopters understand the risks of this designer dog?

Most Chiweenie owners will agree that these little dogs can be one of the most loving, intelligent, and adorable companion dogs ever. However, those interested in acquiring a Chiweenie should be aware of the pitfalls.

The Chihuahua/Dachshund cross is sometimes called a designer breed. In reality, it is not a pure breed and does not conform to a breed standard.

The Chihuahua Half

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog. Chihuahuas were first discovered in Mexico and are a warm weather breed. Preferring sunlight and warmth, they love to sunbathe or tunnel under the covers. For this reason, they also make great lap dogs.

Chihuahuas tend to bond closely with their favorite person or with another Chihuahua and can be very protective for their size. They do not do well when separated from loved ones and may refuse to eat. As with many of the toy breeds, they can suffer from hypoglycemia.

The Dachshund Half

The Dachshund is recognized as a hound by the AKC and was originally bred for hunting badgers. Their long, low and lean body allows them to tunnel into the badger’s den.

Dachshunds are energetic, courageous, and sometimes protective of their territory or favorite person. They are generally tough little dogs but can suffer from disc disease or disc injury due to the elongated spinal column. Their weight should be carefully controlled.

The Blend

The Chiweenie will likely have characteristics from both parents. They are small dogs and if the Chihuahua was crossed with a miniature Dachshund, this Chiweenie will be even smaller. Most of them inherit the long spinal column of the Dachshund. Some have prick ears and some have floppy ears. The Chiweenie tends to shed very little.

Due to their tiny size, they are easy to scoop up and take almost anywhere. This, and the fact that Chiweenies grow very attached to their owner, makes them a great lap dog and companion dog.

Small dogs are sometimes thought of as ‘yappy’ but Chiweenies are not usually excessively so. They do make great alert dogs and can be a bit protective as well.

These little dogs inherit the desire to ‘tunnel’ from both the Chihuahua and the Dachshund so Chiweenie owners can expect to find their tiny dog burrowed under the covers or snuggled into a pile of laundry still warm from the dryer. With their cold nature, warm clothing and booties are a necessity in winter, even for those quick potty breaks.

Acquiring a Chiweenie

Some dog experts warn that ‘designer dogs’ generally come from breeders that have no interest in breed conformation and seek only to profit from the catchy designer name. They claim that many of these dogs come from puppy mills that have more interest in turning a profit than in providing quality housing, food, and vet care for the dogs.

Since inbreeding and early neglect can cause a lifetime of health and behavior issues, it is recommended that those interested in adopting a Chiweenie check with a rescue where all the dogs are evaluated by a veterinarian.

Chiweenie owners who understand their dog and provide proper care can enjoy many years of companionship with this loving pet.

What risks and pitfalls? You mention nothing negative on this page. We are considering getting one of my neighbors chiweenie pups, and are looking for negative aspects so we know what we are getting into.

Chiweenies are considered one of the 'designer dogs' and many 'designer dogs' come from puppy mills where there is often neglect and inbreeding which can cause behavior and health issues. It's great that you're considering this adoption so carefully and if you're comfortable with the dog's background and have it checked by a vet, then a Chiweenie can make a wonderful pet. I know, because I have an adorable rescued Chiweenie.

I just got a Chiweenie a month ago and he is SOOO good! When I first got him I was told that he was a chiwawa, but as he has grown over the past month I am really starting to believe he is a chiweenie, and I am so happy he is! He has been extremely easy to potty train, does not need a leash, and is the biggest lover EVER! However, he is a little bossy :)~ Also, I have a 2 year old nephew and they are great together, just keep an eye on the kids, they tend to think the little dog is a toy. If you're thinking of getting one, go for it, they are AWESOME!! Oh y, they love chewing on bones and fetching tennis balls.

We just got a Chiweenie for Christmas. His momma was a 6 pound weener dog and the Daddy was a tea-cup Chi... He supposedly will be about 3-4 lbs. We are trying to figure out the best way to train him. He seems to like to go outside but in Ohio the winters are so very cold... His new Daddy is my 8 year old son and in just 3 short days he has become very protective and attached to his Daddy.

I just recently adopted a chiweenie and I love her so much! Her name is Frawg.
She is lovable and loves to burrow under the blankets with me and cuddle to keep warm.
I have been training her on puppy pads and after two days of repetively putting her on the pads she is using them faithfully!
She does have a couple accidents here and there but she is a week short of two months old and doing awesome on potty training!
Frawg is too small for a sweater right now, but soon I will get her one and start training her to go outside.

Chiweenies are very easy to pad train, but very difficult to train to go outdoors especially if you live in a colder climate. I adore my chiweenie because she is a burrower, a cuddler, very affectionate, and intelligent. However, she is by far the most stubborn, sassy, and untrainable dog I have ever had. She is also not afraid to start fights with our pit bull and cats even though she is the smallest animal in the house. Sadly enough, all the other animals are intimidated by her. But we love her.

I got my Chiweenie in November. He is actually 3/4 Mini Dachshund, and 1/4 Chihuahua. He is a beautiful, smart, fun little guy. He has energy for long walks, and he loves being carted everywhere with me shopping, etc. He loves to burrow in his blanky, and he loves to steal socks from my sons. He is full of love and kisses, and he just wants to make me happy.
You can see Jager on http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/chiweenie.htm
He is a silver and black dapple

We purchased our Chiweenie, Rylie (13 lbs-not overweight at all), 3 years ago. He is so cute and playful! We thought that he would train easily and we were wrong. Because he is strong willed, we had to take him through obedience training. It was well worth it and we wish we had done it sooner (he was 1 year old). He is an amazing, snuggly, affectionate, loyal lapdog. As long as we make him submit at every turn, he doesn't snap at us. He is very smart and has learned a lot of tricks. He loves showing off and performing. Do not wait to socialize your puppy with other dogs (another mistake we made). He is still a little nervous with other dogs. If we ever get another dog, it will be a Chiweenie!

i have had my chiweenie for about 6 years now
he has more of the dachshund body, but has the temper
and attitude you would expect from a chihuahua.
he's the most loving, protective, cuddly dog i have ever had.
i love him so much and it's getting hard to see him growing older.
he's starting to have the joint problems that dachshunds tend to have
it's becoming harder for him to get up on the bed to go to sleep with me and that just breaks my heart.
but i absoultely love him with all my heart.

We have a nine month old male chiweenie named Kobe. He has been crate trained from day one but we cannot house break him. Is this a common problem with chiweenies? He is very smart in every other way but he continues to pee and poop in the house. Will neutering help? He is scheduled to be neutered next week.

We have a 9 month old female chiweenie and we love her. The only thing is that her hind legs seem to be longer than her front causing her to wobble a lot. Has anyone else had this experience with their chiweenie? We're hoping she just needs to grow into them.

Our family just got a chiweenie about a month ago, his name is Chico. He is so cute and loves to cuddle. he is great with our 3yr old and has been so easy to potty train. We have him pad trained because its cold outside right now and he hates the cold. My whole family absolutley loves him. I recommend this breed to anyone who wants a small dog.

I have a male Chiweenie and he is AWESOME! We haven't had any trouble at all with training him, he learned how to roll over in less than an hour just a week ago and learned to high five in minutes. He LOVES to get under the blankets at bedtime or naptime and will snuggle into my sweater while I'm watching TV. He isn't yappy but he will let me know ANY time the door opens, which is nice since I'm home alone a lot. Everytime we go for a walk at the nearby outdoor mall, we are stopped every couple of feet because people want to pet him, someone actually asked me if they could hold him! His mom is a 10 lbs Chihuahua and his dad is an 8 lbs Mini Dachsund. Everyone thinks he's a Jack Russel Terrier because of his colorings (he's all white with a brindle head and brindle heart on his side and at the base of his tail). He's my first dog and I absolutely ADORE him...I recommend them but only to people who will have the time to be with them...they love attention. :)

I got a Chiweenie 3 years ago. He was an absolute terror for the first year that I had him. He ate our recliner and terrorized my elderly chihuahua. The breeder that I bought him from told me to give him time to get out of his puppy phase. So I did and I'm so glad that I did! He's the best dog I could ever hope to have! He's very affectionate and he's so easy to train. He loves all kinds of other animals (which got me in some trouble with a coyote) and he is quite people friendly. Potty training was VERY easy with him and his hyperactivity is only present when his friends and nanny come over. He's made it to 15lbs. and can easily step over my 16lb. doxie with his long, long legs. He's obsessed with his ball and LOVES to play fetch. He's actually really possessive over all of the toys. He doesn't burrow, but prefers to sleep all curled up in a ball ontop of anything he lays on (he looks like a fawn). At night though he likes to curl up to my feet under the covers. I've also noticed that he really likes water unless my Doxie (Bobby) is around and then he acts afraid of it like Bobby does. He tries to mimic Bobby a lot. He's insanely fast and can sometimes look like a blur flashing across the yard. I love watching him run. He can also jump about 5ft in the air and he seems fearless when he jumps into my lap from several feet away. I've had a chihuahua and I have a dacshund. I know both of their personalities, but my chiweenie is a whole other creature. He's my favorite pet ever. He's like my son. I can't imagine my life without him. I will definitely get another Chiweenie when I'm ready to add to my pack, but I can't imagine that any pet will compare to Sawyer. I'm glad I decided to give a Chiweenie a try. I had been looking for another Chihuahua, but I found the perfect dog instead.

I rescued a year old male chiweenie about 3 months ago. The house he was rescued from kept him gated off in a kitchen 24/7 so he is not house trained and has poor social skills. I live in Northern AB, Canada so needless to say that adopting a warm climate dog in the winter does not make for easy house training. He'll get it though. It's hard to undo a year worth of damage. He definiately has both Chihuahua and Dauschand traits - has attached himself to me, LOVES to burrow and sunbathe. I have a 4 year old Rottie mix who is also a rescue and they play wonderfully together.
**I cannot stress enough the importance of rescuing. I rescued my $1200 "designer dog" for $200. Specific breeds are out there to rescue, you just have to look! petfinder.com is where i found mine.**

We "inherited" our Cheweenie from my daughter when she moved out and we love her to death. She has the long dachshund ears, sort of a long body but not as long as the Dachshund. She has a short nose and a big chest. Her front legs look like those of a Dachshund and her back legs are more slim like the Chihuahua. I am not a dog person but have totally fallen in love with this little girl. Makes me want all the Chi and chi/dach puppies. One of her parents is supposedly "tea cup" size but she is not, she is around 18 pounds although her breeder called her Tiny because she once was. I'm hoping this summer she'll burn some of it off. She has the most wonderful disposition and personality and gives us many laughs. Don't know what we'd do without her.

I just got a chiweenie this weekend from the local shelter, and already we love this dog! Its my 5 year old son's first pet, and they are just wonderful together. He follows me everywhere and I get the feeling i will never be lonely! The only problem is, he shivers all the time, i worry that he is cold, but he will not wear a puppy sweater, so i am just praying for warm weather soon. yay chiweenies!

My chiweenie turned 3 in Jan. 2009. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. The only 2 "irritants" are #1 very hard to TOTALLY housebreak. "Chilly" will let me know during the day when he needs to go out but does not like to wake me up at night.
#2 He chewed everything as a pup and will still if he is mad at me.
I hesitate to say it's irritating because he is snuggled in my lap as we I type and ohhhh soooo adorable! I personally think chiweenies are GREAT animals. I have two daughters and they were 7 & 8 when we got him. He has NEVER bitten, and only snapped when they were provoking him to do so in play.

I adopted a male 1 1/2 year old chiweenie about a month ago. I had him neutered that first week and he has been the best dog I have ever had. Doesn't bark much unless someone new comes around or he wants to go outside for a potty break. He sleeps with me at night at the bottom of my bed in his own blanket and has a great playful personality. He does tend to want to eat too much so I do limit his food througout the day. I have also found this dog does get very attached to one person in the house and will tend to follow them around. My Chiweenie also smiles at me every time I leave the house and come back home.

I have a 5 month old chi weenie her name is missie and she is so cute. She is all black she is very hyper loves to play for hours. She follows my boyfriend and I everywhere she barks really loud when we leave her. She hates that. They are really smart dogs I would recommend anybody to get one. She like to steal our socks and pile them in the middle of the living it's so funny..... I dont no if its just my chi-weenie but she likes to bite on everything she sees, so you gotta watch that!

I adopted my chiweenie, Frieda, two years ago. She is the sweetest dog around my husband and myself. Oh, but if there is a knock at the door, she goes nuts! I have worked with a trainer etc. She goes balistic when anyone comes over. She does not just bark to alarm she barks and then continues to do so for the entire time anyone is in the house. She has bitten one person and at this point I feel like no one else would put up with her. Our friends and family really have no desire to come over and it is exhausting. Maybe if you get one as a puppy you would have better luck shaping its behavior, but mine was a yr and half and I feel that at this point these two breeds together are just not a good thing. Although I love my Frieda this will be last chiweenie.

My Chiweenie is the best dog I have ever had. He loves to follow me around the house and I have become his favorite person because my husband works a lot. He can be very anxious around small children and he licks excessively, sometimes to the point that it is quite irritating. Other than that he has had no health problems and he is a year old...he's a great little companion and I wouldn't trade him for the world.

I have aquired a what I think is a chiweenie. I was told Beau was a mini daschund, but I'm not so sure with the way his body is shaped. I have had Beau for about a week and a half now and he is definately a great dog. I have 4 other dogs ranging from 45 -105 lbs. He gets along with all of them great. I also have 2 inside cats that have became his best friends. I am having a little trouble house breaking him. I have potty pads and he does potty on the, but he will not poop on them. Does any one have any suggestions?

I have a dachshund/chihuahua/Yorkie mix dog which I got from an animal rescue. He was an owner surrender and I was lucky enough to be his new mom. He's got the body/eyes/front legs of a dachshund, the face/ears/hind legs of a chihuahua, and the long, silky, wavy hair from a Yorkie. He's quite the jumper and runs in circles. He's a smoky chocolate color and his hair grows fast. I'm always trimming his long wavy, silky hair. He doesn't seem to mind the cold too much and doesn't like to be covered up. Occasionally he'll tolerate a blankie over him if he's in my lap or my mom's lap. I think his hair keeps him warmer. He's an odd mixture but very cute. I love watching people try to figure him out when they see him. He has a deep, loud bark which sounds like a larger dog. I love having him and he's very entertaining. When he runs, he looks like he has cowboy chaps on. He will do anything to sit or ride in a car. A car is his favorite place. I'm lucky enough to be his mom.

My Chiweenie Atticus is just a year old and a wonderful pet. He was advertised as a pure bred doxie(3/4 standard, 1/4 mini) but it was clear to me upon meeting him that wasn't completely true. I'm guessing the 1/4 part mini was actually chihuahua. He is very smart although quite stubborn. Potty training was easy, his biggest issue is separation anxiety, he cries and almost screeches when i leave the house sometimes. But it is getting better. He is definitely a one person type dog, although he is warming up to my friends he sees often. He is best friends with my 7 year old Golden Retriever. I recommend socializing them early, he does display some nervous behaviors. My vet has warned me about letting him jump, as it leads to back problems. He hasn't been around many children, but we are always cautious because of his slight nervousness. Overall he is very sweet and cuddly and has been a fun addition to the family....not to mention Aaaadorable!

I think that is a good thing because then i can pass them out to my family. We are always fighting over the dogs. (who gets to sleep the him/her) My grandma has my other one and I think they might have "gotten together" I love this breed of dog and wouldn't give my Spice up for anything in the world. She is a great garbage disposal, crumb picker uper, and great for my kids to be around. She is even very protcetive of the baby.

I have a one year old Chiweenie by the name of Shelby. She's got the length of a Dachshund but with the slender legs and big chest of the Chihuahua. She's tan with a small white crest. She is actually my very young sister's dog (difference of eighteen years) but most anyone with pets will know what it's like to have a child take care of a dog. I'm home a lot, so she's attached herself to me, and is constantly around me at all times if given the chance.

For the first six months, potty training her was very difficult, but she just sort of 'got it' one day, and hasn't had a problem since. She loves to play fetch, doesn't chew on anything but her toys (which is good as we have a pretty expensive kitchen), and curls up on her bed at night.

She is INCREDIBLY active which can be something of an issue as I have bad back problems.

Personally, I like larger dogs, but she has grown on me incredibly since we first got her.

We have had our chiweenie for over 9 months now and she is wonderful. She loves to play with our children who are 5 and 3 as well as our boxer and shih tzu. She sleeps under the covers with us and is a joy to have in our lives. She has a lot of energy and loves laying in the sun. She is very attached to both my husband and I. I didn't read any "downfalls" to having a chiweenie and I have to say that the only thing I could think of would be that she loved to chew on things when she was younger... buy what puppy doesn't chew??? Hardly any! Overall our little bundle of love is happy, and healthy and we love her more everyday!

I adopted my chiweenie at petsmart through a local rescue about 8 months ago. I named her Rosie and she is about a year old now. Rosie weighs 8.5lbs and is blonde with a pinkish brown nose. She looks more like a chihuahua and behaves more like a dachshund. I say that one side of her body is chihuahua and the other side is mini-dachshund because one ear stands up and the other ear flops down! It is the cutest thing. My husband and I have four dogs(2 mastiffs, 1 chihuahua, and her) and she is the best one out of all of them. She is very attached to me and comes to work with me every day. She doesn't like to be left behind and loves to go where ever I go and is always very well behaved. I call her my social butterfly! She never barks, bites, or growls. She loves other animals, loves to ride in the car, she gives everyone lots of kisses, shows everyone her belly for rubs - and LOVES to burrow under or inside of anything!! She is also very curious and can get into things - I call her, Miss Nosey Rosie! But she is not a chewer - she just likes to drag things out of the closet (especially shoes.) The only negative thing I can say about Rosie is that she is stubborn when it comes to being totally housebroken. She does have a few accidents from time to time. (especially when it is cold or raining out) But that's okay! I always forgive her. She is the best dog ever!!

I recently lost my beloved Chihuahua, Mikey. My daughter suggested a Chiweenie. I have had my little guy for 2 days. He cries when he has to go potty. He had 1 accident in the house - when it was raining outside. He sleeps with me at night - cuddled up to my back. And he has not pottied in the bed. He is sleeping right now on my foot! He seems to love the contact at all times. When I go to work I put him in doggie daycare - as he is only 7 weeks old today. His head is a Chihuahua - but with the floppy ears of a Dachshund. He has a long body - but with the pert little tail of a Chihuahua. He has the front feet - the big clubs! - of a Dachshund and the smaller back feet of a Chihuahua. He is black, white & brown and the white parts are freckled with brown and black. Under his tail it looks like someone took a paint brush and painted a brown stripe over his butt! He has a white strip on his forehead. He has 2 brown eyebrows! He is very playful and craves human contact. Very curious too! His name is Wiggles - because he is very wiggly! I'm sure I will love him as much as I did my Mikey-boy.

I have an addorable Chiweenie named Sweet P. She is now 1.5 yr old,and she did not come from a puppy mill. She is the best thing happenig for me. Yes she is a big sniggler. I let her sleep with me and she goes everywhere and I mean everywhere with me. She has a doggy stoller and I take her in stores too. Except grocery stores, that's just nasty. But, she love, loves to car ride. She is very protective of the whole family. That is including nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She is good member of the family and I am so happy to have her. I will be getting another Chiweenie. People inbreed so much that you never know what your getting. So pittfalls and risks can be from any breed that you get.

Does anyone know how they will interact with other animals in the house, specifically three cats and three very large dogs.

I recently bought a Chiweenie, and in the seven months I've owned him, he has learned to ring a bell to go outside, sit down, and cuddle lovingly whenever. Jack is the best dog to take anywhere as he simply sits silently in the passenger seat in the car. He is so perfect and loves our older dachshund, who has gained new life through this hyper little playmate. Jack is definitely my baby and I have to recommend chiweenies as perfect pets and loyal friends.

I have a 1 year old chiweenie named Milo. I have had him since he was 3 months and he is the best dog ever! He's the perfect dog for an apartment. He's so smart; potty training only took a couple of weeks. Not only is he crate trained but he also has his own bed that he sleeps in every night! He travels well (7 lbs), I've taken on several road trips with him, I take him everywhere. He interacts with other dogs well, I would say they socialize easily. He hangs out with his 2 bestfriends all the time which are a pitbull and great dane. They are quiet and the sweetest dogs ever. I want another one.

I have had A chiweenie for over a year. Her name is Lucy. I have had her since she was 3 months old, and she is the greatest dog you could ever come into contact with. She is cute, small, and So full of love. I would tell anyone who wants a good, easily house broken, easily trainable dog, to go with a chiweenie. She is always up to play, or just to lay down and cuddle. They're the greatest dogs anyone could ever buy!

I have a Chiweenie and she is the best dog Ive seen. I have a little girl who is 4 and they get along great. She is good with other kids, dogs and cats. She hardly ever barks and had no problems house training her. Although she tends to run and jump up on people even when shes on her leash. That is the only peoblem I have with her. She is a great dog to have in an apartment. I saw her at the shelter and had to have her.

I have a two year old female chiweenie. I love her to death...very smart and affectionate. A couple annoying traits though. She barks quite a bit...to be protective I'm sure. She is very hyper...never sits still and has to know what it going on every second of the day. She also suffers from separation anxiety...she doesn't like to be left alone for one second. She cries when I even go in the garage. Despite these traits, I wouldn't trade her for any other breed. I had a cocker spaniel before and she had all kinds of behavioral and physical problems. All in all a fantastic dog!!!

I have a Chiweenie dog that is about 1 yr. old named Nugget and she is a wonderful companion. Sometimes she can be protective of my husband in a playful way. If I go to snuggle with him or kiss him she squeezes right in between us. We adpoted Nugget from the pound and it has been the best thing we have spent our money on in a while. :) My brother-in law just had a liter of chiweenies and we are going to take one of them too. I think anyone considering a chiweenie should get one. Just make sure they are very a reliable person that has taken care of all dogs. I don't not support any puppy mills and think they are awful. Dogs are meant to be like our children loved and protected.

Here is my comment about Chiweenies, because they are so small, they react to loud noises and sometimes my baby pee's...they have weak little bladders

We acquired a Chiweenie from our local Humane Society a couple of years ago. He was very shy and difficult to train at first, probably because he had not been properly socialized as a young puppy. He's not as smart as the herding and hunting dogs we've had, but he is very playful and sweet-natured. He loves to cuddle, even with the cat.

Some problems that potential Chiweenie owners should consider:

Both Chihuahuas and Dachshunds are protective and sometimes aggressive dogs. Most people don't think of them as aggressive because they are too small to do much damage, but, because they tend to be very loyal to a small pack of people/animals and they're often affected by the Napoleon complex common to small dog breeds, they are sometimes unfriendly to strangers. Our dog especially dislikes cats (besides the one that is part of his pack), other small dogs, and young children. Before we managed to properly socialize him, he would frequently growl and snap when scared.

Another thing to consider when looking to acquire any mixed-breed dog is that the health problems of one breed do not necessarily cancel out the health problems of the other. A Chiweenie with the long back of a Dachshund are likely to have back problems. A Chiweenie with the bulging eyes of a Chihuahua may be prone to eye infections. Also keep in mind that Chihuahuas often prefer temperatures warmer than what many people consider comfortable, and a small short-haired Chiweenie is likely to feel the same. And, as with any dog that has very short, sparse hair, a short-haired Chiweenie like ours may require sunblock to prevent sunburn when spending any length of time outdoors.

I have a Chiweenie Puppy, and he is amazing. If anyone wants to know the pitfalls or negative behaviors of this dog, I have experience. A Chiweenie is a dog who is very alert, mine DOES bark if he hears someone or if someone comes into my house. He also is a very jealous little guy, he will bite my other dog (a Pomeranian) if I show her too much attention. The only thing that I warn to others considering a Chiweenie is that when ready to go on our morning walk, my baby jumps, 'nips, and goes CRAZY in excitement, it is hard to even get his leash on! But I also must say: My Chiweenie is incredibly intelligent, he understands anything I tell him. He is also the best alert dog ever, so protective and loving. He is also very good with kids and other dogs. I completely recommend a Chiweenie!

my girlfriend and i recently adopted an 11 month old chiweenie. we don't know her history but she is the best dog i have ever had. i have had other rescues who required a whole lot of work to become great dogs but Ellie is so smart and eager to please she is almost too easy! she can go on long hikes with us and loves to run but she is also happy to curl up on the couch. she is a bit shy with big dogs but gets along wonderfully with other small dogs. she does bark quite a bit when playing but that is almost the only time we hear her vocalize. i can't say how much i adore her. i would recommend adopting a chihuahua/doxie mix if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Chieweenie Butter Cup was a rescue and she is one of the best dogs I have ever had. She is so loyal and loving, and mighty for her mini size. Butter Cup stamps her foot at you when she is mad. LOL! She does not really like strangers and when she gets excited she sometimes sprinkles (this is not fun when she is on my bed), but she helped heal the wound of a previous loss. Also she is best friends with my 80lb 3 year old mutt Bella. They play all day. This type of dog is good for someone who needs a companion dog for there dog or some who is disabled like myself and is mostly home bound. I would watch this dog around children, since they are so tiny and sometimes tempermental.

When we first got our little chiweenie Cloe she weighed 1 lb and 7oz! She has had our hearts from day one! I was told by a man that saw her one day that he had had one and she was the smartest dog he ever had. That is so true with Cloe! We can tell her to go get a certain toy and she will go get it. She love snuggling with all the family members and she loves attention, not to mention she loves to fetch and chase lasor lights. She is not to fond of small children for some reason but I think they make her nervous. She will bark at someone at the door if we are here, but if shes in the house alone we can knock all day long and she will not let out a peep! Maybe she doesn't want anyone to know shes here alone? Anyways she love the lake and swimming and she is very beautiful and smart!

I just got a chiweinie yesterday and we are so madly in love with her already. We have a ferret and she was already acting tough at only 5 1/2 weeks she tried to beat up the ferret. She slept on me all night and is just so precious. We joke that we could use a shoe box as her crate when we start crate training her. Her daddy is a rescued former puppy mill mini dachshund and her mommy is a chiahuahua, she looks mostly like her daddy. I have always had bigger dogs so it is weird to only give her around 2 tablespoons of food and she is full, I am used to giving a whole can and the dogs are still hungary. Well if anyone is interested in one, definitly get one because you will fall in love immedialty

My wife and I received a Chiweenie named Izzy from rescue and must say she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever seen. As far as pitfalls go, they can be hard to house train. Ours is less than 6 months old, and we are not making headway. Having said that, it took almost 2 years to get our male doxie where he only goes outside . . . with no cheating. The other risk is, while the experts say these dogs are not chatty, ours must have a greater share of doxie in her. She is very chatty. Our Izzy has attached to my wife and I both. She loves to snuggle, lay in our laps, sleep on our 5 year old doxie, and chase the cats. If you canspend time with a Chiweenie, then you will have a true freind for life.

I love my chiweenie, Baby. Baby will be 2 in February 2010. She is a great dog. She has never bitten anyone. We have a 3 and a half year old daughter that is a terror and Baby has never bitten her or growled at her. Even though sometimes I wouldn't blame Baby if she did. haha She loves to be under covers and prefers to be in between your legs while you sleep. She loves EVERYONE and wants everyone to LOVE her. She loves to have her belly rubbed. She is VERY protective!!! If she thinks someone is at the door she goes CRAZY. We cannot let her outside alone or not on her leash. She wants everyone to know just how vicious she is. Therefore she will growl at you like shes a pit bull. Total short man syndrome. If your considering a chiweenie you should DEFIANTLY get one!! Best dogs ever!!

If I had a chiweenie for about one and a half years and I had to get rid of him becuase me and my dad moved did that have any effect on him. Reason I asked was becuase I was the only one that was able to comfort him. I was the only one to love on him. As you can see we had a bond.

My girlfriend and I have an 8 month old dapple chiweenie. I have never seen a dog like this in my life and everytime we take her with us people ask us if this is a new breed.lol. I agree with all that was listed on this page about them. Our vet told us that she will overeat so watch the portions and if they do become overweight it can lead to hip issues. I've also noticed that her eyes can get watery and red sometimes, maybe due to allergies?
Other than that she is extremely intelligent, she knows sit, lay down, spin, paw, bang! and roll over and she's only 8 months. She follows me right by my side and is extremely obedient on and off her leash. I highly recomend this breed and she will do anything when a child is in her presence!

I have a lovable chiweenie and he is very protective and his big ears hear everything so he will bark at my roomates in the morning annoying but I love him. He does burrow himself into the blankets and if he sleeps on my bed he must be touching me at all times haha. He is more connected to me then anyone because I raised him. When I moved out he was upset, hardly eat and so I took him home with me. He is beyond lovable and if they do something bad and you raise your voice you can see there little heart broken they love to be on your good side. I recommend this dog to anyone who does NOT get it from a place that uses puppie mills that is horrible and the health can result to early death, blind, or bone problems [I know I had another dog who had those and we found out if was from one :( ] Take care of the dog, give it love and attention don't be gone for more then a day. This was a wonderful article thank you.

I have a Chiweenie that a friend found in her yard. I gave him to my mother for awhile, and when she passed away, I got him back. My mom did a LOT of obedience training with him, and he's better than he was, but he's still pretty strong-willed at times. Sometimes I call him and he refuses to come, esp. if it means going outside to do his business in the rain or cold (he hates it). We have had problems with him going in the house when he is too lazy to go out or when the weather is bad; we really have to make sure he stays on a schedule or he WILL go inside. Supervising him when we're home helps (we keep him on a long lead in the family room so he can't wander off) and keeping him in his crate when we're away as well.

He can be possessive around food and around his "people." He's also very aggressive with strangers, esp. men in hats. We think he was probably abused before we found him. He gets along fairly well with our cats, although he has been known to roll them if they get too close to his food dish.

On the plus side, he is a great companion. You can take him anywhere in his little shoulder bag; he loves it. I have taken him to the mall, the grocery store -- you name it. He's very quiet in his bag; no one even knows he's there. He is a terrific traveler. I have flown with him and taken him on many road trips and he is very cooperative. He loves to walk and explore. When we take him to the beach, he barks and bites at the waves. He also likes to attack the sprinklers. It's great entertainment for us! We put a coat on him to go outside in the winter. He doesn't mind wearing coats or t-shirts, but he doesn't tolerate his hotdog Halloween costume very well. He loves to burrow in blankets, and he has an old mattress cover in his crate that he will not part with and loves to bury himself in. He's very loving, and likes to cuddle with his people and play tug of war with his squeaky toys.

His only real health problem is allergies. We think it's to grass pollen as it tends to be less of an issue in colder months. When it's bothering him, his eyes water and he licks and chews his front paws. There is not much you can do for grass allergies aside from shots as there is no way to avoid it. We manage it by wiping him down with baby wipes when he comes in from outside, and giving him a small dose of Benadryl when it's really bothering him. We also make sure he is bathed regularly with an oatmeal shampoo.

I think it's hard to say whether a Chiweenie is a good fit for a particular home b/c they are all so different in temperament. I wouldn't recommend this dog to a large, active household because he would quickly become overstimulated and possibly bite someone, but a different dog from a different background might be fine. He works well in this household tho, and we love him.

The term 'Chiweenie' is new to me. I thought we had a Doxihuahua (my invention), and didn't know this 'designer breed' existed.

Our 9lb rescue, Robin, came from a shelter in southern Washington State. Within 3 months of receiving her she had to have 19 teeth removed, leaving her with 7. She also has sebaceous adenitis, a very nasty condition uncommon to Doxies and Chis. She will be on medication for the rest of her life, and is very prone to infection. She grows horny, curling nails which snap off without warning. We're assuming these issues are a result of poor breeding and neglect, so buyers, beware.

On the plus side, she is an angel - perfectly behaved, flawlessly housetrained, with the sweetest disposition. Her tail never stops wagging. The hard thing is to keep her weight down, as she loves food and deserves so many treats!

I recommend these dogs very highly, as long as you know the background.

My 2 'boys' just turned two Dec 2009. They are brothers that I got from a friend who had a male black standard chihuahua and a small red long haired dashund that produced a litter of 4. I was only going to get 1, but my husband and I couldn't decide on the two we narrowed it down to, so we took both. Never regretted it. Rrex and Rrusty are the most loving little dogs ever. Almost too smart. Very obedient and calm (unless, of course, doggie-battle is waged) Highly recommend these beautiful guys. (they got their mother's longer coat, and father's loyalty) Thank you for the article.

We have 2 chiweenies & 3 weener dogs ( and one beagle boxer mix). We have a female and male chiweenie that are a month a part. The male was easier to house train but he is very protective over the other dogs & will get upset if a dog steals a treat or toy from another dog. He feels he is king of the house ( the beagle boxer allows him to think so also). He is around 6 pounds and acts more like a cat. He is a great jumper and very flexable. He loves to play with our other chiweenie who is a month older than him and a female. She loves to play ball and could catch and return the ball when she was just 5 months old. She also would sit and would follow outside without a lesh. She always comes when you ask her too but we have the biggest issue with house breaking. All our dogs wear coats, sweaters, and the chiweenie's wear boots outside. The boy does not like to go outside in the winter and sunbaths in the kitchen. The girl loves it outside and plays with the bigger dog all the time. She is his shadow. The both are huge cuddlers and like to be carried around. The boy will howl if anyone is hurt or acts like they are hurt. He hates to see anyone in pain. We would have more chiweenies but for now 6 dogs is enough

Good article, though I also dont see any downfalls. I adopted a Chiweenie(had no idea that was the name at the time!) from a local shelter, and he has been amazing. This was my first dog, so I was prepared for anything he could dish out. But low and behold, no problems whatsoever.

He almost never barks (only when playing)
Never had a houstraining accident
Great with kids and children
Most definitely a "people dog", loves loves loves everyone!
Snuggles under the covers always
Learns very quickly, he learned lie down in 20 min.

I could not have asked for a better dog!

I have a chiweenie and he is the most well behaved loving dog! It is definitely true that you need to keep them dressed for the weather because their dauchsand side hates to be outside when it is cold due to their "parts" being low to the ground. To save the clean up get them a coat and be sure to keep it in a save place so it lasts for a lifetime

I have a 7 year old female dachshund and her male puppy who is 5, as well as a 2 year old male merle/fawn chihuahua. my female dachshund and my male chihuahua ended up breeding and they have had three litters of puppies. I have kept a puppy out of the first two litters one male 1 1/2 years old and one female 1 year old. They are the most loyal of all of my five dogs. They have been very easy to train, and they get along very well with my 3 year old niece. My female Chicken Nugget loves to ride on my shoulders in the car. While her brother loves to ride on my lap and look out the window. The both of them are very protective of me and the entire family especially in the car if someone gets to close. All of my dogs get along with cats, rabbits, and other dogs. They enjoy going to grandmas house to visit her four dogs including the 100lb golden lab that my mom has. Our vet clinic that my son works at, and takes care of our animals states that our dogs are very well breed. I would highly recommend this breed to anyone who is looking for a small breed dog.

This is truly the best dog I have ever had and if I ever get another dog it will be a chiweenie just like my beloved Peanut. I highly reccomend this dog to anyone looking for a loyal companion.

We have a one year old (7.5 lb) Chiweenie and she is just precious! She is the best dog. Only issue we've had is she doesn't like us going away so she must be crated. She is getting much better at not crying when we leave. Very quiet (never barks), barely sheds, likes doing what you want (being active or realxing), loves to play with toys and get dressed...All around great companion! She does hate the cold weather and likes to burrow under a blanket.

My buddy has a Chiweenie named Jonah who had a litter of puppies and he was trying to give them away. Igor picked me and we've been best friends ever since! He's 7 months young and loving life! He almost drowned yesterday by jumping in the creek when the rapids were too fast. Apparantly he didn't want to be away from me for too long, lol. He's fine now and we're enjoying sunbathing in the yard today! This breed is a great one indeed. I'm not a dog person but I love Igor more than anything! <3

I have had my chiweenie for 2 years now! i got her at a farmers market. She is probably the cutest thing in the world. She is very loving, cuddly, and playful but the only problem i have had is that she is VERY PROTECTIVE. She tolerates my dad and loves me, my mom and my stepmom. Other than that she snaps at everyone else. She has to get used to a person before she even lets them pet her.

I got my brother a Chiweenie and the only thing you need to worry about is them being around small children that don't know how to properly treat a dog. My son gets bite and barked at on occasion, but it's not a big problem since the dogs bark is worse then his bite, and his mouth is to small to do any damage! They are the sweetest dogs ever, and they love to play, snuggle, dig, and get attached and defensive of their owners very quickly. If this sounds like things you can handle, then the Chiweenie is the right dog for almost anyone, if not then get a Basset Hound, they're great for families, and get along with any situation!

My Chiweenie Raider is a 1 and a half . We have had him since he was 8 weeks old. We love him so much but he is still so hyperactive he is hard to train . He is pad trained but has decided that he needs to mark the house so his brothers and sisters know he is in charge ( we have 3 dogs and 4 cats) even though he is the smallest ( he is 9 lbs).He loves to play with ,challenge or hump all animals in the house regardless of their desire which leads to many growls and barks in aggravation over Raiders quests throughout the house. He also enjoys chewing and eating anything that is reachable ( shoes , underwear, foil , cans and especially diapers) . He also loves to curl up next to us and sleeps under the covers .I am going to try to get him into some obedience training and the vet has told me getting him neutered will help to calm him down...we'll see .
I am very happy to have him as I know it will get better as he gets older . He is a member of the family and is lovable and very loyal to us but also friendly to anyone that gives him a glance.

I have two chiweenies brother and sister, and the girl is the most lovable dog i have ever seen, she'd rather cuddle all day in bed than anything else. AAlso the male is most content on someone's lap. I havent really experienced any serious health problems with neither and i 've had them for 7 years. I thank they make great pets and the most lovable companions, so if youre thanking bout gettin one go for it!

I just got a chiweenie and she is about 9-10 weeks old now. She is sweet as can be, and is already doing great with potty training. I take her out to my front yard and let her do her thing and then come in. The only problem I am having is she is VERY aggressive around food. She will try everything she can to get to my food when I'm eating. And she has been nipping at my kids. My 8 year old daughter went to pick her up and she bit her on the cheek and it left a few scratches and a small drop of blood on her face! I can't believe she is acting that way and I do not know why because she is very well behaved otherwise. And my daughter is very well handed with all our pets. We've had dogs and cats since she was born. Anyone else having a problem with a nippy puppy????

I have a Chiweenie & Chihuahua both are very loving but i honestly prefer my Chiweenie more. My fiance didn't want either because he is into big dogs but when i brought our chiweenie home he couldn't have been happier. Now my Chiweenie is almost exactly like how the article describes but she has 2 people she has been attached too! My Chihuahua is a great dog but somtimes we have a hard time with her, she tends to get to excited & pee that gets annoying but she is very trainable she almost allways uses the potty pads but our Chiweenie doesn't like to allways use the pads. Even with this little flaw i have to say my Chiweenie is the best dog i have ever had. I plan on breeding her to a mini daushend or a Chihuahua, i want other people to enjoy what i have and pay a fraction of the cost for a cross breed dog than for a full blooded dog and get all the same things.

I got a Chiweenie for my birthday. The only "pitfalls" I have noticed is that he is extremely stubborn and has been a hasle to potty train. Also, if we leave him alone for more than a few minutes he likes to get into stuff and chew on things. Other than that he has been wonderful. He is VERY affectionate and deffinately does not like to be away from me. He will throw a fit and whine at the door if I just walk outside.

I have had my Chi for two years. Everything in this article is true.....except for the puppy mill part. My little girl is amazing. Only two accidents during potty training. What other breed can claim that?? When I go to bed, I have to lift the covers so she can tunnel under them. When I wake up, guess who lying next to me???....Yup, my little girl!
In fact, last night she bolted off my bed, out her doggie door and barked like crazy. I went out side and saw my neighbor coming home. She knows him...but just wanted to let me know someone was close to our house.

I got "Precious" from the local shelter. She has a chihuahua ears and tale but a weenie body and is eight months old. She broke out of the bathroom (where I put her while I am at work because she gets into everything), opened my fridge, got my pizza out and finished it off....LOL. She LOVES to burrow under a blanket or pillows and to snuggle up with me and sleep! She knows no stranger though...she befriends EVERYONE! She will bark if someone is at the door but she just wants attention. The pizza man came and she licked him to death! I have only had her about a month, but I LOVE HER TO DEATH!!!!!

I have a 6 month old chiweenie named Tater. Tater is a wonderful, loving, active and very intelligent dog. He rarely barks but will let me know when someone is around. He's friendly with other dogs and very social with every human he meets. My only issues are that he chews everything...including the carpet edges and me...and he has not been easy to potty train completely. He is now much better about letting me know when he has to go outside though. I assume this will get better with age. He sleeps in his crate and has never, ever pottied there since I got him at 5 weeks old. I've never had a little dog before but I consider myself blessed to have found such a good friend in my little Tater Bug.

We've had our Chiweenie for two years now. Fantastic dog. He has positive traits from both parents such as strong legs and teeth from the dachshunds and playfullness and charm of the chihuahua. Definately a lap dog (life is just perfect if you have a blanket). Our "Frank" is the only dog I've known that gives hugs around your neck and presses his cheek to yours. In fact he insists on doing this as his greeting. Highly recommend this mix breed.

These dogs do tend to have dental issues. Every Chiweenie that I have come across has an underbite. The vet doesn't recommend breeding if they do since it's a genetic defect. Mine also came equipped additional teeth that need to be pulled and an umbilical hernia. With the cold weather setting in, she does try to be too "quick" outside and then has accidents inside. But she is very sweet, playful, cuddly, protective, and is not a "barker". The cats don't mind her yet she is definately an alpha dog. She tries to put even the biggest dogs in their place!

I was given a chiweenie two days ago and I'm head over heels for her already! I named her Bella (for beautiful). She is about 8 weeks and currently weighs just 2 pounds! She has done exceptionally well with doing her potty outside, although she has messed in the house a few times, which I think is to be expected. I have noticed that even the slightest wind or chill and she either nestles between my feet or just stands there and shivers, so I'm not sure what we'll do once the truly cold weather arrives! She's still way too tiny for any sort of store bought sweater. She is already very strongly attached to me, always on my heel wherever I walk. Snuggle time is our favorite activity! We are crate training her without a doubt. So far, she and our cat aren't getting along, but we figure that will just take some time. Bella is a lover, sweet to the core and loves to play with her toys! We've found that cat toys (fuzzy mice) are perfect for her because they are just the right size - small! She is all black with one tiny swatch of white on her chest. She has the dachsund legs without a doubt, and floppy ears (I hope they stay that way!). But those weepy, Precious Moments eyes are 100% chihuahua. And, they are mama's kryptonite! I can see that she will be a friendly, lovable, playful companion and feel so blessed to call her mine!

I've have my chiweenie for 14 years now... chuy was a rescue dog. He is very protective of me, if I am laying down NO ONE can get near me- not my husband or my son... he's protective of them but not to that extent. He is also the "policeman" of the house, he will run after and bark at my son if he runs or yells or does something he doesn't think is allowed.
Over the years, he has developed the need to bark that he didn't have when he was younger. When we had a cat he needed to mark everything, now that the cat has passed on, so has the marking. He burrows and lays in the sun all day... but he loves going in his huge crate at night and getting real sleep. He's a good dog, bad teeth, but overall good health- sturdy, p. I'd recommend a chiweenie- I know I got the best of both breeds in one dog...

We Love our little ones and now in the future I don't think I will have anything but this lovely little designer dog. LOL did not realize I had a designer dog either. You really cannot ask for a better little dog. Our only draw back for our little female is that she wets if my son goes into to quickly to pick here up. Other then that can say one bad thing about them.

Excellent information. Thanks. We just got a 4 month old Chiweenie into rescue. He has already bounced through 2 homes and been rejected. He is full of love, lots of energy, and looks right at you when he pees on the floor. The breeder sold him at 5 weeks, way to young and it is going to take some work to get him to the level of high potential that he is capable of. Please, please research the breeder and the dog before you purchase. No 4 month old puppy should have already ended up in rescue because of stupid, greedy humans.

I got my baby,Hannah in August 2009. She was found in a forclosed home--left to die. I fell in love with her on sight. The absolute best decision that I ever made was scooping her up and taking her home. She has grown from tiny to 17 lbs. She is long legged and loves to tunnel. She hates to be left alone for any length of time--unless it is her decision! Luckily we live in South CA or she would never go poo outside. She hates cold and RAIN. She is usually sweet and loving, but can snap if she feels that we are threatened by anyone. I have taught my grandkids to tell her No when she gets bossy. She has gotten much better with that. I think that this behavior stems from being abused and abandoned. We all adore her and she knows it.

my family and I have had our Chi-weenie, Tico for almost 2 years now getting him when he was 6 weeks old from my husbands niece. They are the cutest little dogs ever besides miniature Schnauzers, I've always loved smaller breeds and fell in love with Chi-weenie's after playing with Tico's brother Tiny from the same litter and begged my husband for one, luckily his niece said that they had a few more that they wanted to give away to good homes. For a long time when he was still in the "baby" stage, he wanted to be held and nurtured by everyone, I have a 12 year old daughter and 16 year old son and my son likes to pick at Tico making him growl so Tico doesn't like my son much and has even snapped at him a few times, animals have a wonderful memory and don't forget a thing obviously! He is very territorial and bossy at times - my husband and I have his bed near ours and at night if anyone has to get up to go to the bathroom he growls and whenever he gets ready to go to bed for the night he thinks everyone else should too and should anyone bother him whenever he's in his bed he snaps at them. We haven't had him fixed yet and are wondering if that wouldn't help with some of the aggression and bossiness. He is also very nervous and shaky all the time - I've noticed that in alot of Chihuahua's. He's not completely house trained, we've managed to get him to "go" on a pad a few times but he will "go" outside just fine, he is a male dog so we have the problem with him "marking" everything which I think getting him fixed will help with that too. Has anyone else noticed that whenever they talk to their dogs (I know that sounds nuts but alot of animal lovers talk to their animals like they were humans, I'm guilty - even tho they're not human they're a living, breathing little creature) that they "sniff" themselves?

I never thought of myself as a small dog person, until I fell inlove with a three-year-old Chiweenie from a local rescue organization. He may be small but he has a big heart!
He has the most beautiful eyes and while his ears perk up like a chihuahua - the tips of them flop down.

He is always right by my side. He's so eager to please which has made training a breeze. He's also the perfect travel companion as he adapts well to new environments. While he loves cuddle on the couch, he is also up for a little hiking or jogging from time to time (provided the weather is just right).

If you are considering a chiweenie, please check with your local humane society or look at petfinder.com. There are lots of wonderful dogs out there that are waiting for a home! Adopt don't shop - it is truly a rewarding experience.

Great read. We have just got a Chiweenie pup (3 months old) and have had about a month and she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had. Her mom was Chi-Yorkie mix, and her dad was a full blown Weiner dog. She loves to snuggle, lay on my shoulders, etc. She burroghs in the covers when we go to beed at night. However, she has a bit of problem pooping in the house. We are still working on this problem.

I have had my chiweenie for over a year. She is perfect! She is about 6lbs and her personality traits resemble that of the article. She is very loving towards everyone, but she knows I'm her momma! She is very smart, potty trained and does very well without her leash as well. Energetic, but knows when it's time for bed. She sheds minimally, and she is the perfect company. Such a personality! Sits, begs, lays down, etc. on command. Very smart! I have other friends with chiweenies who also agree that they each have their own little personalities!

Oh I have two chiveenies and they are the love of my lives. They are so precious to me. They do tend to be a little mischevious and a little naughty, but there's nothing they will do that will make me really mad at them. It is so true about them loving to be in blankets, my dogs have their own beds and their own blankets to sleep with at night and they totally want to jump in the laundry every time I put it on the bed!!! I have one floppy eared black one and a brownish reddish one and he has the pointy ears, we are careful with the floppy eared one because he does scratch one of his ears so bad that it bleeds and dry blood gets in there, so I do clean them out every other day and put his medicine in there, also it gets a little stinky, but that's really the only problem, but vets say that's common for floppy eared dogs.

Great article! I have a 15 wk. male Chiweenie that is loved to pieces! I just have one question.....does anyone know how to train your pup to not pee on his/her pillow or blanket? My boy is going through housetraining and is great all day and, as long as he does not have a pillow or blanket, at night. I give him a small piece of sweatshirt to sleep on and he does not soil it. I would appreciate any suggestions/help.

Sometimes when dogs urinate in weird places, it has more to do with marking behavior than potty training. The following article may be of interest. http://www.suite101.com/content/dogs-urinate-in-weird-places-a40482

I've had my chiweenie for about 7 years now, she's definitely a one owner dog and she's very protective. She's a little neurotic- i rescued her and she never got over some of her "issues."
She's a very active dog, we go for walks sometimes three times a day and she has a fence (fastest dog I've ever seen!) but lately I've noticed she's started to fall down our porch steps and trip over nothing at all. She was always a confident and graceful dog and this is pretty weird- could she be inheriting the spinal issues of a dachshund? She's only 7 and she's definitely not overweight (I have trouble keeping weight ON her) so I don't know what to do..?
Apr 21, 2011 11:10 PM
Joy Butler :
Poor baby. Tripping down the stairs has to not be any fun, and could, in itself, bring on spinal problems. I'm sure there are many things that could be causing her to trip, such as spinal problems, neurological problems, arthritis, vision problems, it would be hard to guess. But I think I would get her in to see her veterinarian. Early diagnosis and treatment always give you the best chance for a good outcome.

I am relatively new to the Chiweenie family. I have two 21 week old puppies. They are the most fun and friendly dogs that i have ever owned. They are amazing lap dogs already. However, I am having one significant problem with them. They seemingly will not house break. I have tried pad training and crate training. With the pads, all they do is tear them up. Crate training is just too crewl for me to handle. So over the last 4 weeks, we have been trying outdoor training. It goes well for days and then they seem to forget and poop in the house again. Is there anyone out there that speaks Chiweenie. That is to say, can anyone help me understand how to get the idea across to my dogs without scolding, hitting or rubbing noses in poop?

We've had our spotted little Zelda for almost a year now. She is white with dachshund colored spots all over her. When we got her, we didn't know what she was mixed with until our vet told us. She has the face of a Chi and the long floppy Dach ears! The cutest and smartest dog I've ever known! We do keep her on scheduled feeding times so she doesn't become overwieght. She is definately a burrower....and only barks when the other dog barks! Also, this article is right on about them becoming attached. She follows me everywhere I go!

I adopted my male chiweenie almost 1 year ago. The vet guesses that he is 6 years old. He is a great dog, very attached to his family, especially me. He loves to be with me to cuddle and loves my husband for playing. He comes to work with me 3 days a week and I take him to the smaller dog park to let him socialize. He loves other dogs. We are not sure about his previous home, but feel that he was abused because he is very afraid of men. He is also not a fan of children and other strangers. He is very protective of his house and will bark if somebody is at the door, plus he barks when the doorbell rings on TV. He is not a fan of heat or cold. If I try to walk him when it rains, he tries to hide under our car. Great dog, I absolutely love him!!

Not bad. We have two chiweenies. One looks like a long-haired chihuahua that is mostly black (name is Sassy), and the other looks like a dachsund (not as long) with a chihuahua face (name is Tawny-which reflects her coloring). They have the same parents, but are from two different litters! They are about 4 and 6 lbs. respectively. They are VERY loving. The oldest can be snappish. Both are tiny with very LARGE personalities!

I love this article. I have just rescued a Chiweenie. I have never owned a small dog before. But, I have fell absoulutly in love with my new friend (sister). She also burrows all of the time. She sleeps with me, and I worry that I don't sufficate her because she is always burried in the blankets somewhere.

i have a 13 month old chiweenie and i absolutely love him! We got him 10 months ago and he was the size of my hand. We have a 5 year old teacup Yorkie and at first my chiweenie dale wanted to hump her at 2 months old. They grew to ignore each other. He likes to alert us when our neighbors our outside or if someone is on our yard. He is a very vocal dog. He took to me out of my entire family. Theres only 2 bad things that i don't like when i take him for walks he grawls and trys to bite anyone that comes near me and he taught my Yorkie how to dig so if i let him out side to pee he gets out and goes after my neighbors. I love that he always wants to sleep in my bed and he likes to play with my blanket till hes under the blanket. We also got a puppy that's only 2 months old and 3x his side and when the puppy goes after my Yorkie dale is protective. Over all this dog is amazing

Good info but I've got a few questions. First does it make a difference which parent is Chi and which Weiner? Secondly if you breed two Chiweenies what would you call that?

My Chiweenie is Rico and I got him at 4 weeks old. He was the last to go so the owners must have been anxious to get rid of them. I thought he would have problems with manners since he was taken away so early. So far they may be minimal.
He finds things on the floor and chews them up and then swallows. I chase him to take it away and he runs under the sofa. He will growl at me hold on for dear life. He loves to be chased. By me or my 7 year old Pom/Poo.
He like to crawl under everything. He has always slept under the blankets. The only thing he doesn't like any longer is to sit on my lap and get loves. Only on the lap if I have a plate of food. He is super sweet at times and ready to chase something most of the time. He is always on the go. He even whines when he wants something. He whines until he gets what he wants.Very demanding.

We have an adorable chiweenee named Prince. He is such a sweet boy. He started out a little nippy but if you show them love and who is dominent, they will calm down. He is very protective and partial to his family. We wouldnt trade him for anything in the world.

Thanks for writing some details about Chiweenies. We absolutely love ours, although there are some draw-backs with Chiweenies. Our little lady is Roxy Hart (4 pounds, 7 ounces) and is by far the bossiest family member out of all of us. They are demanding dogs and when you do not answer their request I promise you can expect some kind of consequence. She on the other hand is not very trainable and is not into consequences at all. We are currently struggling with trying to stop her from her off and on again peeing and pooping inside... she is 1 year and 7 months old. We think the people that we got her from did not potty train her at all. Now if everything is okie dokie in the house and going her way, she will gladly go potty outside but, if she pees or poops in the house it usually means she is upset with you. She is the most loving and social dog I have ever met and I am totally in love with her. They will feed your heart and soul if you are the chosen one they love and they will pick only one and you will know who it is instantly. The minute we got in the car with her my partner had her and she came right to me and never looked back.

I have a 9 month old chiweenie and I love him to death. He is a really good dog but had separation issues. When I first got Kujo ( i know right, a big name for a little dog) i worked only at night so was home with him all day, since then I have gotten a day job and now leave the house very early in the morning. He started chewing up my things (shoes, clothes, accessories) the things i would use to get ready to leave in the morning. He has still not gotten used to me being away during the day and practically does backflips when i come home! I have been trying to find away to break him of this bad habit but it seems almost useless... that little dog is not happy unless he is with me and he lets everyone Know it! We have been raising him with two pitbull terriers and he has begun to think of himself as a big dog. there is nothing that my bigger dogs do that he cant. I was worried that he might get hurt playing with them but he seems just fine and the pitbulls love him. They get along very well! These are great dogs to have if you are looking for a companion but not so much if you dont have the time for them! they do need constant attention or they get bored and into trouble!

I have a 9 week old chiweenie. He is my baby. I got him when he was 7 weeks old. My mom made a deal with me that if i potty train him in 2 weeks i can get a compainion for this dog. Do you think that it is possible? He is a very smart dog. He learns very quickly but can not seem to catch on to this. I need to be stronger a buckle down on him though. Thank you for your help! Have a nice day!

I have a 2 yr old Chiweenie named Snickers. She weighs 6.2 lbs and her mom was a Chiweenie and her dad a Chihuahua. She is the best dog. Like the article mentions, she loves to sunbathe and snuggle under the covers or against my body. She isn't yappy but will bark if she hears something approach the house or if a stranger comes inside but settles down very quickly. She does seem to dread when I leave her to go to work and still gets excited when I come home. I try to take her with me on errands when the weather is nice, she loves to ride in the car, she is a good camping dog too. I just make sure to have a sweater packed for her in case it gets chilly at night. I don't think you can go wrong with one as a pet.

I adopted a chiweenie, Macie, three monts ago; she is now 9 months old and the love of my life. She follows me everywhere, sleeps with me and is always so excited when I come home from work. The one down side? She stares. Constantly! I get home from work, take her for a long walk, feed her and play with her. After all of this I'm ready to relax on the couch and eat some dinner but she stares at me (whether I have food or not). I've tried talking to her, giving her a toy or a bone, playing with her, cuddling; she will do all of these things for a few minutes and then simply sit there and stare. I hate to say it but its driving me nuts. I've tried all of the "long lasting dog toys" too, like the kongs you fill with food that should keep them occupied for some time but she is to smart for them! What takes a regular dog an hour takes her a minute. Any suggestions?

I got my chiweenie before chiweenies were popular at a local kill center. I decided I wanted a puppy and wanted to save a life in the process. She really is the love of my life. She is really protective of me and anything of mine.

I have a chiweenie, she is about 6 months old now, and is the sweetest thing ever. She HATES to be away from me and her momma. We have noticed that she has been wobbling. I am not too sure what could be wrong? Does anyone else's chiweenie wobble while its just sitting?
Nov 28, 2011 2:38 PM
Joy Butler :
By "wobbling" do you possibly mean shivering or trembling? Like Chihuahuas, Chiweenies do not like cold and even a slight drop in temperatures can make them tremble. Also many of them tremble if they get nervous. If your dog is doing a true wobble, it may need to be seen by a vet.

I obtained an adult chiweenie by rescue. I'm sure the couple who had her before paid a bundle, but weren't taking good care of her. I took her on the condition of finding her a good home (I had heard that they were yappy overpriced mutts) but was so pleasantly surprised that I got attached to her. She is 5 lbs, but has the personality of a stick of dynamite. She loves to sit in my lap, burrow under blankets, play with small toys, good with children, ect...but she also runs after dogs 20 times her size, gives me an attitude when she doesn't get her way, she is too funny! And of course I can dress her up and carry her around in my purse. If they were more like her, I would definitely recommend a chiweenie as a family pet. A couple of things you must understand: they can be hard to housetrain (which is common in the dachshund breed), and they really need to stay warm in the winter (even just to go outside) as we learned when we had to take her to the vet for respiratory infection during her first winter. If you can take the extra time to take care of one, a chiweenie is for you.

I have a Chiweenie and he is very hyper active. I love him to death but he does not listen no matter how patient or repetative our tasks are. If he see's the opprtunity to run off, he will. You would think he wants to get away, but once he's tired he will make his way back (if he can find it or I find him). He seems to be very smart and catches on pretty quickly, but he is a stuborn little thing if he doesn't want to do something or go any where. He loves playing with other dogs no matter the size his temperment with children is excellent. Where other dogs might bite a child, he stays calm and lets them hold him wrong and "toss" him around a bit.

My 3 year old chiweenie, Lali, is very cute and loving. She is about 15 lbs, but not overweight, so I guess she would be on the larger side of what a chiweenie could be. She's very smart, energetic and extremely loving. Although I've put her through training she can be a bit stubborn about returning when I call her. I worry one day she will run off if she ever gets outside. She also tends to get very excited with visitors and I have to put her away sometimes so she does not bother them too much. She does well with other dogs and absolutely loves the cat. She has no problems with accidents in the house. The most important things is keeping a regular schedule of walks and potty outside and spending a few minutes every so often refreshing her on commands training. I think a yard is important too because of her dachshund hunting behaviors. Hope this helps.

My boyfriend and I just got a little male Chiweenie around 8 weeks old that we named Barney. I had 3 min-dachshunds when I lived with my mom and he had 2 chihuahuas before, so a Chiweenie is the perfect mix for us. Barney is incredibly smart and very nosey. He has attached himself to me, but he is definitely a people person. We take him with us around town, and everyone stops to pet him and he loves it! Right now he is obsessed with socks for some reason so I always seem to find them scattered down the hallways. He has been easy to train on puppy pads (for when he has to go at night), and during the day he goes to the door if he needs to go out. He does have a couple accidents here and there, but he is only 8 weeks, so I can't be mad about that. He is the best dog I have ever had and I can't wait to see what life with Barney brings =)

We adopted our Chiweenie (never heard this term until AfTER we brought him home) from a shelter and he was a rescue from a puppy mill. He is the most loving, fun dog we ever had!! Loves our family and yes, loves to tunnel under the blankets. Was easily trained to do his thing outside, loves playing catch/retrieve the ball, and we are working on catching a frisbee! I will say that when he takes off after the ball, he sorta looks like a flying sausage but we love him!!!

I adopted a female Chiwennie, after my dog passed after almost 16 years, the best thing about her is her personality, she is bossy, and thinks that she is a "PIT BULL, she charges anyone who gets close to me, she loves to take rides, and play catch w-her toys, I always make lots of time for her, I so do enjoy her, and thankful, Because I honestly thought I was done w-dogs, I had taken in many strays, and sick ones, and the homeless ones, but I realized I just could not be with out one, Sofia has taken most of the sorrow away, and she loves me, what I love most about her is, she can talk up a storm, and just carry on, like us humans do, when we want to be heard.....I hope you all are enjoying your Chiwennie as much as I am. they are great little companions

This page explains the Chiweenie to a T! I bought my chiweenie in October and love him unconditionally! He is so loving and protective of me! Loves to sunbathe and sleep under the covers. He does not bark at all!!!!!! only a few times so far. The only problem we've had with him is that he loves to drink water and doesn't know when to stop. We're working on this issue now, but I've heard that his sugars could be too low.
Apr 30, 2012 7:54 PM
Joy Butler :
Your chiweenie sounds adorable but I suggest you have him checked by a veterinarian. There are a number of illnesses that can cause dogs to drink excessive amounts of water and if something is wrong, the sooner you catch it, the better his chances of a good outcome.
