The belief that a Chihuahua can "take away" asthma from its owner is still held by some, however medical experts reject the idea that the folk remedy can cure asthma.

For many years, the idea that Chihuahuas can cure asthma has been passed around. Citing personal experience or hearsay from someone else, supporters of this idea believe that the toy breed dog really can take away asthma from its owner. They may claim that the dog should sleep on the chest of the asthmatic person to somehow take in the asthma itself.

Short-haired Chihuahuas may be considered somewhat more hypoallergenic than many dog breeds but the scientific and medical community regards the loss of asthma symptoms in the presence of a Chihuahua as purely coincidental or psychosomatic. In fact, in some cases, some dogs and other pets may even bring on asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath and wheezing.

Origin of Chihuahua as an Asthma Cure

The origin of this folk remedy is not clear but several theories can be considered. Although asthma treatment includes medications and other measures, at present, the medical world has no cure for the respiratory disease. The majority of asthma cases are successfully managed but some severe asthmatics, in their search for relief, may be willing to accept, and pass on, unorthodox ideas. At any rate, the folk remedy has been around for many years.

One rumor has it that the superstition may be somehow connected with the Aztecs. In history, Chihuahuas were quite popular with the Aztecs who held the belief that the dog would take on the sins of a dead person and guide him through death to afterlife.

Perhaps seeming to add support to the asthma-cure belief, Chihuahuas sometimes have respiratory problems and may make wheezing sounds similar to asthmatics. Since asthma seems to be most prevalent in children who often lose their asthma symptoms as they mature, it may be easy for some to conclude that the coincidental Chihuahua in the household “took away” the asthma from the child.

Another theory may be that acquiring a faithful companion like the Chihuahua may ease stress and tension in the life of the asthma sufferer which in some cases may relieve asthma symptoms. Dogs and other pets have certainly been proven to lower blood pressure and hasten healing in some illnesses.

Managing Asthma

While a Chihuahua can be a good choice as a pet and loyal friend, the best choice of asthma treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic, is under the care of a physician, generally with long-term control medications, quick-relief medications, possible allergy treatment, and avoidance of bronchial inflammation triggers.

Shs the only one with asthma and several other allergies. all better now no fast acting inhaler for days now when she used to use it at least once or twice a day. t good to see her run and play...i believe in my chihuahua...

I had a chihuahua as a child and then had other dogspast the age of 16. I began having symptoms of allergic asthma in my 30s and began taking various medications and inhalers. About three years agao I ran out of one of my prescriptions and was feeling ok. I then ran out of all then one at a time and did not return to my doctor until I just had a cold. I went two or three years and continue to be just fine. It later just "hit"me. I had gotten a chihuahua as a Christmas gift 3 years ago and she sleeps with me. She does snore and wheeze. I do believe there is something to it! I got the dog because I liked having one as kid. I never thought about asthma, so it was not a superstition!

My girlfriend's son had asthma. We had no idea about any sort of chihuahua-asthma superstition. All I know is that after she bought a chihuahua because she liked them, his asthma disappeared. It was until later that we heard about the claim and then realized that it is indeed true.

My cousin has 3 children and two of them have asthma. They too have a chihuahua, but the children still have asthma. The chihuahua did not take away their asthma.

My twin brother had no asthma attacks after we got our Chihuahua as a gift. She was only 5 weeks old. My brother began to wheeze and the dog got in his face, up to his mouth. She choked and no more asthma for my brother. That was 47 years ago, so I believe he is cured!

This is an old wives' tale that I believe is prevalent in the Mexican culture(I am of Mexican descent) I thought it was hogwash! Then I got a pair of brothers for my mom! Now I am a believer! I have the dogs now and when I get sick it lasts about a week and I don't get bronchitis from it! I am a firm believer now! =]

I have had asthma all of my life and I used to have a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier/Feist mix. It's not some magical cure that works immediately 100%, it's just that most of the fight against asthma attacks it calming the asthmatic down so that their heart will stop racing and their lungs can work on opening up again. The reason Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes are so good for kids with asthma, is that when they sit on the child's chest, they go a long way in calming the kid down, and then it becomes a sort of safety blanket for the kid, because they know, with their dog there, it's easier to calm down. With me, at least, my asthma started getting less severe when I had Alex with me. In my experience, they also latch onto the kid with asthma, and become protective and inseperable with them. A Chihuahua is a good idea for a child with asthma.

i truly believe that the myth is true. My son has asthma and while his symptoms haven't completely gone away they are definitely alot better. He has fewer attacks and they are alot farther between. Also whenever any of my kids get sick with a cold or the flu my chihuahua lays with them and so to speak pulls the cold or flu right out of them.

Let me guess, you all believe in ghosts and santa still too. There is zero scientific posiblity this could be even remotely true. The only reason your "child" stops wheezing is the proven scientific fact that people relax and calm down with a pet. Get them any dog, any cat, and it would have the same result.

I am fifty one years old. Two years ago, I began to have asthma attacks. Last year, I was taken to the hospital twice. The first time, I was hospitalized five days. The second time, it was for three days. My sister gave me a chihuahua puppy for my birthday. My chihuahua began to sleep in my bed with me. It´s been 7 months since I seen my doctor, or use my inhaler. MY CHIHUAHUA IT´S BEEN THE BEST THING THAT HAPPEN TO ME.

In the early 1960's, doctor's told my grandma to get my dad a chihuhua and the dog would take on his asthma. Even if it's an old wise tale, my dad's asthma was gone. When my brother had asthma, my grandma brought him a chihuahua and he too never had an attack. As far fetched as it may be, I believe there is truth in it. My sister in law had really bad asthma (in and out of the hospital weekly) and while living with my inlaws, I bought a chihuahua and she has now been asthma free for 11 years. Unfortunately my kids have all been diagnosed with asthma and while taking inhalers, steroids and antibiotics, still have flare ups. So now that they have "officially" been diagnosed as athmatics, we are going to purchase a chihuahua..never hurts to listen to your grandma every now again haha.
